VPN Not Connecting or Disconnecting? A Complete Troubleshooting Guide

Effective VPN troubleshooting starts by identifying whether the cause is the local network, account status, app, route, or a system conflict. Change one variable at a time in a consistent order instead of repeatedly reinstalling everything.

Check the network and account first

Disconnect the VPN and confirm that ordinary websites load. Then check device time, plan status, expiry date, and device limit. If the base connection is unavailable, restore broadband or mobile data before investigating the VPN.

Change route and protocol

Reconnect, try another low-latency route, and then test a different protocol. Hotel or airport networks may require completing a browser sign-in portal before the VPN can connect.

Eliminate system conflicts

Do not run multiple VPNs or proxies together. Check whether a firewall, security app, private DNS, or network extension is blocking traffic. Record the time, exact error, operating system, and network type for support.
