How to Improve VPN Speed, Latency, and Connection Stability
Encryption and an extra network hop mean a VPN cannot have literally zero overhead. However, severe slowdowns, abnormal latency, or repeated disconnects can often be improved with a controlled troubleshooting process.
Establish a useful baseline
On the same device and network, test download, upload, and latency both with and without the VPN at similar times. Several measurements are more informative than one result and help separate a VPN issue from normal broadband variation.
Check route and Wi-Fi first
A geographically closer, lower-latency server is usually faster. For weak Wi-Fi, move nearer the router, use a suitable 5 GHz or 6 GHz band, or test Ethernet. Large downloads on other household devices can also consume available bandwidth.
Protocol, device, and app checks
Try automatic routing or another protocol. Temporarily disable other VPNs, proxies, or security tools that may also intercept traffic. Update the operating system, network adapter driver, and VPN app before testing again.
