VPN Privacy and Security: IP, DNS, Cookies, and Browser Fingerprints

A VPN changes the path of network traffic and what some participants can see, but it does not erase every digital trace. Understanding IP, DNS, HTTPS, and browser identification is more useful than promises of one-click anonymity.

IP addresses and DNS

With a VPN connected, websites generally see the VPN server's public IP. DNS requests should also use a protected route; otherwise queried domain names may be exposed. Client and operating-system DNS settings need to work together.

HTTPS, cookies, and fingerprints

HTTPS protects content between a browser and a site, while a VPN protects the path to the VPN server. Both can work together. Cookies, signed-in accounts, and browser fingerprints can still identify a user; a VPN does not automatically remove them.

Logs, accounts, and trust

A VPN shifts some trust from the local network to the provider. Read the privacy notice and distinguish account records, diagnostics, bandwidth metering, and browsing content. Look for clear retention and deletion rules.
